Help & FAQ
Here you’ll find answers about DiskDonut. If something’s missing, write to us.
Getting started
How do I start a scan?
When the app launches, choose a folder or a drive. While the scan is running, you already see preliminary values; the ring fills up step by step. If you don’t want to use your own data, you can try DiskDonut in demo mode with sample data.
Why does macOS ask for access to folders?
macOS protects certain folders and asks you before an app may read them. It’s your choice: scan individual folders, or grant Full Disk Access in System Settings under “Privacy & Security” to see the whole drive. DiskDonut doesn’t bypass any of macOS’s protection mechanisms.
Are saved scans loaded automatically?
Yes. Next time you launch it, DiskDonut opens your saved scan right away. The free version saves one scan, Pro as many as you like.
Rainbow ring & colors
How do I read the ring?
The ring always shows one level: each segment is a folder or a file, and its width corresponds to its share of the storage. Click a segment to go into it; the new level builds up clockwise. Clicking the center takes you back.
What rules determine the colors?
Size: the largest area is Electric Blue, followed by Amber, Pink, Lime, Deep Blue, Teal and Violet. Subfolders stay in the color of their branch, in up to five lighter tones. You’ll see the same color in the legend, in lists and during cleanup.
What do “Free” and “System & Snapshots” mean?
When you scan a drive, the ring shows the whole drive: “Free” (dashed) is unused space, and “System & Snapshots” (gray) is storage that macOS uses but that isn’t visible as regular files – local snapshots, for example.
Safety & cleanup
What do the four safety levels mean?
Protected: system and core areas, locked in DiskDonut. Caution: e.g. app bundles – with a note on what to watch out for. User files: your own files; only you know whether you need them. Cleanup candidate: typical space hogs such as old installers, with a reason.
How do I remove files?
Select an item and move it to the Trash – via the Inspector or by dragging it onto the Trash target. Before anything happens, you see a summary; locked items are excluded automatically. Cleanup is part of DiskDonut Pro.
Can I delete files permanently?
Yes, but only user files – and only after a warning, confirming “I understand” and a second confirmation. Permanently deleted files can’t be restored from the Trash.
What does the “Clean Up” view do?
It collects suggestions such as old installers, disk images or large downloads that haven’t been touched in a long time – each with a reason. Special Cleanup takes care of well-known space hogs such as Xcode DerivedData, Homebrew and npm caches, node_modules and Mail downloads, and explains how to safely shrink Docker images and iPhone backups.
How does the duplicate search work?
You start it yourself. DiskDonut compares the contents of the files and shows only true duplicates – not merely files with the same name. You decide what to remove.
Search & lists
What search syntax is available?
Combine extensions, sizes and types – for example .mov >1gb for large movies or type:video for all videos. There are also ready-made lists for largest files, largest folders and file types.
Purchase & license
Where do I buy DiskDonut Pro?
On the Mac App Store as an in-app purchase, or with a license key for the directly downloaded version. Pro costs €14.99 one-time (launch price €9.99).
On how many Macs can I use Pro?
On up to 5 of your own Macs. On the App Store, the purchase applies to your Apple ID; with the direct version, you use the same license key.
Are there discounts for students or teams?
Yes, on request. Write to us at info@ronin-studios.de.
Privacy
What data does DiskDonut read?
Only metadata: names, sizes and dates. File contents are read only by the duplicate search, which you start yourself – and even then only locally.
Does DiskDonut send anything to the internet?
No. There’s no account, no cloud and no telemetry. Saved scans stay on your Mac.

DiskDonut can be operated entirely from the keyboard.
